"Salem 66 was an indie-rock group formed in 1982 by Judy Grunwald, Elisabeth Kaplan and Susan Merriam. At the time, a serious almost-all-female rock band was somewhat unusual. This release is part of a compilation of all the vinyl-only releases. Susan is my friend. When I met her (in our restaurant days), she was just starting to pursue her interest in art history, eventually being accepted to doctoral program at Harvard. She sent a lot of time in Belgium -- Fleming painting was her speciality. I once took the chunnel from London to Brussels to meet her for lunch. She teaches at Bard, and was involved for some time in their Prison Project. "

"Michael Atherton was invited to create music for an 1997 exhibition _Life and Death in the Land of the Pharoahs_ for the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, The Netherlands. He threw himself in. Studying extant and archival musical elements, he constructed both music scores and the instruments themselves in as close approxmation as he could. He states in the liner notes that his experience in playing medieval monophony as well as Eastern European and Turkish folk music helped him a great deal in realizing the project. "
