aka Wilfred Gerald Edwards (1938 – 15 August 1992) known as Jackie Edwards, was a Jamaican musician, songwriter and record producer. Strongly influenced by Nat King Cole, he began performing at the age of 14. It was introduced in Howard Hughes' last film One Minute to Zero as the instrumental titled "Theme from One Minute to Zero". Jeri Southern sang on the first vocal recording released in April 1952. The first hit recording by Doris Day came out later that same year. I remember being struck by the song as it wafted out of a practice room at the Crane School of Music. John Rohde was in there playing it on his tenor. He and I were both in heartbreak zone. In that spirit, I picked out another song of similar sentiment (and equally beautiful) to include on the program for my senior recital -- If I Love Again, from Funny Lady. In his youth, the Hungarian-born Solti studied piano with Béla Bartók. He had a particular care for the music of Wagner. He served as music director of the Chicago Symphony between 1969 and 1991 and remained the orchestra’s “Music Director Laureate” until his death in 1997.
