Part 2 of our conversation with author and anti-racism activist J. CHESTER JOHNSON. His book is called "Damaged Heritage: The Elaine Race Massacre and a Story of Reconciliation." In this episode, Dave Goodman and Marc Stern focus on reconciliation; particularly how Chester Johnson comes to grips with his grandfather's membership in the KKK and participation in the 1919 massacre that left upwards of 200 Black Americans dead. Mr. Johnson tells us how his friendship with Sheila Walker, a descendant of several of the victims, has changed his outlook and ability to forgive his relatives. Plus a look at the mythology of tradition and so-called heritage that many white people can't give up without facing their own link to a terrible history and modern day privilege.
